4 things to consider before buying a guinea pig

Guinea Pigs are a popular choice for pets. Their sociable, friendly temperament makes for a great addition to the family.

But before you buy a Guinea Pig, make sure you have considered these four things!

Commitment

Guinea Pigs have a lifespan of around 5-7 years, sometimes lasting 10. This may not be as long as cats and dogs but it is still a long time that you must be willing to commit to.

Socializing

Guinea Pigs are extremely social. To ensure your Guinea Pig a lifetime of happiness, it is suggested to provide them with a friend. Same sex pairs will ensure there are no surprise babies and keep your Piggies from going lonely.

Large cage

Guinea Pigs need lots of space to run around and play. Unfortunately, most cages on the market are not sufficient in size, especially for two to share. Do some research into cages and providers of well sized ones, before leaping into any decisions.

Choosing the right one

It is important that you are buying a healthy, happy Guinea Pig to take home to your family. Look out for signs to show that the Guinea Pig is well socialized. Check that they do panic or seem skittish when handled. You want them to be relaxed, and happy in your presence. Be certain that the Guinea Pig is also in good health. Important things to look out for include:

An active Guinea Pig will most likely be a healthy one
Check the eyes, ears, nose and rear end are clean with no signs of discharge
The Pig should not be too fat or too skinny
The fur should be full and soft and skin should have no flakes or redness
No signs of lice

Don’t forget to check your local shelter for any up for adoption before heading to the shops. You may be able to save costs and provide a home to a Guinea Pig in need of one.
