We take a closer look at the Canary and why they are so interesting.
Generally in the wild canaries are yellow in colour however domestic breeding means that they can also come in an array of different colours: orange, white, red, rose and also some can be bred to have a colour combination. Canaries can also be bred to incorporate size, shape feather type and other characteristics. For example the Gloster Canary is known for the feathers on top of its head which looks like a cap.
In the wild a Canary’s diet would consist of seeds and occasionally some insects. A domestic canary should be fed good quality seeds, pellets and also have access to fresh clean water to drink. Occasionally fruits like apples, bananas and peaches can be given as a special treat. You should never feed your bird avocado, fruit seeds and chocolate these can cause serious medical problems for your pet.
Canaries are a bird that prefers not to be handled, can be quiet timid and are happy to be left alone. Their cage should be big enough for them to be able to fly around in and toys should be provided to give them some mental stimulation. Male Canaries are known for their beautiful singing voices. Females also start to sing at an early age however they usually stop at about six months. They are great birds and though they may be small they have big personalities.
If you are thinking of purchasing a bird remember to do your research. Before you decide on which species is right for you please consider factors such as: it’s lifespan, the noise, time, commitment, safety, space, expenses and attention it needs.
