Fruits can help to strengthen a dog’s immune system, aid their digestion and even also reduce inflammation. We take a look at six of the best fruits that dogs can eat.
Apples are a great source of Vitamin A and C and fibre. They promote digestion and can also be used to aid with diarrhea. You have to make sure to only feed your dog apples pieces and never feed them any apple seeds as they contain cyanide.
Packed with potassium, fibre and vitamins bananas can help with your dog’s digestion and also are good for their heart and muscles. In dogs suffering from gastrointestinal problems, they are an excellent source of energy. In a healthy dog, however, too many bananas can cause constipation. Due to their high sugar content, bananas should only be given to your dog as an occasional treat.
Berries are a superfood packed with antioxidants and contain Vitamin C and K, calcium, zinc, iron and magnesium. They are known to prevent cell damage and potentially fight against cancer. All three types of berries are a great bite size treat for your pooch.
Cherries have a lot of vitamin A, which is good for your dog’s eyes, skin and fur. The high potassium content also supports the muscles and nervous system. It is again important to remove the stones as they are poisonous when chewed on and can cause a blockage of the intestine in small dogs.
Watermelons are so high in water content that they can help keep your dog hydrated during hot summer days. Watermelons are packed full of Vitamin A, B6 and C along with potassium which promote strong muscles. It is important to remove any seeds and rind before giving this tasty treat
to your dog.
This fruit is packed with vitamins, folate and zinc which are great for your dog’s digestion and immune system. Pineapple also contains an enzyme which can help your dog absorb proteins. As they are very sweet this treat should only be given in moderation, peeled and cut into bite size pieces.
It is important to remember that not all fruit is good for dogs and some can actually cause serious harm to them. Be sure to always check with your vet on your dog’s nutrition and on which foods are safe to give.
