How to keep your cat healthy

We’ve put together a list of things you can do to set you up for a healthy, happy cat.

Whether you have a cat for the first time or are an experienced cat carer, keeping your cat safe can sometimes feel like a daunting task.

Microchip

One of the most important things you can do for your cat is to have them microchipped. Microchipping and registering your cat will mean that should the worse happen and they manage to escape or get lost, you as the owner can be easily tracked down and notified.

Vaccinate

Another highly important task is to ensure your cat is up to date with all of the necessary vaccinations. This will protect your cat from common and deadly diseases. Chat to your veterinarian and follow their advice.

Flea and Tick Prevention

Not only do fleas, ticks, mites and worms cause discomfort, they can also pass on diseases and pose long term health risks.

Regular Vet Checks

It is important to keep a close eye on your cat’s health, with daily home checks. But there are some things better left to the vet. Your vet will be able to have a thorough check and deal with any issues before they become serious. Keep up with regular vet checks and see your vet as soon as you notice something unfamiliar.

Cat-proof the House

Make sure your cat is safe to roam around the house, free from any danger. Cats love to squeeze into strange places so keep any electrical cords or toxic products well protected and out of sight. If you have an indoor cat, keep doors and windows well secured to prevent any escapes. Make surethe windows are never opened at an angle if your cat is left unattended. This can cause serious injury.

Provide a Balanced Diet

Provide your cat with all the nutrients they need with a well-balanced diet. Stick to a routine of meal times and portioned food to keep your cat happy and at a healthy weight.

Exercise

Don’t allow your cat to become complacent. Keep them mentally and physically stimulated with daily play sessions.

Groom

Finally, lend your cat a helping hand from time to time by keeping them well groomed. Longhaired cats need to be brushed to avoid matting of the fur. But your shorthaired cat may also enjoy the attention and extra cuddles.
