Safeguarding your dog at Pride celebrations

Numerous regional events are happening as Pride month draws near. Before bringing your dog to any events, there are a few things to consider.

Our advice for keeping your dog secure and content during pride festivities is as follows:

1. Review the forecast

Extreme weather is a possibility!  You don’t want to expose your dog to extreme heat because that could cause them to have heatstroke and possibly burn their sensitive paw pads.

It goes without saying that you should always make sure your dog has access to fresh water wherever you go, in good weather or bad. Never take them out at busy times, and make sure there is enough of shade for them to relax in.

2. Think about the crowd

There will probably be enormous crowds due to the number of celebrations taking place. If your dog enjoys being the centre of attention and does well in crowded situations, they will be right at home!

However, it is advisable to avoid bringing your dog if they are likely to grow agitated and defensive amid unfamiliar people. This is for the crowd’s and their own security. If you decide to bring your dog, make sure it has identification on its collar or harness in case it gets lost in the crowd.

3. Take a break

Even though it will be a fun day for everyone involved, your dog could become overwhelmed with everything that is going on. Find a shaded area where they can rest for a while before returning to the fun!

4. Rewards!

Let your dog know they are doing well by giving them lots of praise! If it’s their first time at such events, giving them their favourite goodies will encourage a positive connection with their behaviour at the event!
