Kennel Cough

You may have read many articles recently on Kennel Cough (Canine Cough) as winter is approaching. Just like humans, dogs can catch a cold during colder months. Our furry friends are more susceptible to a range of illnesses brought on by exposure to cold weather.

Prolonged exposure to cold weather may compromise a dog’s immune system and make them more vulnerable to viral infections, especially in young puppies and immunocompromised dogs.

Kennel Cough is a highly infectious disease, affecting the respiratory system. As with the common cold, our canine buddies can catch Kennel Cough by exposure to pathogens (Parainfluenza and Bordetella bronchiseptica are two common agents associated with kennel cough) through close contact with another dog or contaminated surfaces.  The spread of this disease is usually caught at places where dogs are socialised, such as shows, kennels and obedience classes.

Symptoms can persist for several weeks or could progress into more serious conditions.

Symptoms may include:

• ‘Honk’ like cough
• Lack of appetite
• Lethargic
• Fever
• Nasal discharge

Vaccinating your dog against kennel cough may suppress symptoms and the severity of the disease if contracted. The vaccine may not prevent your dog from contracting the disease,  but it is an effective way to potentially speed up or improve his or her recovery.
